Explosion Risk Assessment

Scope of works

  • development of the Explosion Risk Assessment document (and determination of explosion hazard zones) for process installations and facilities with possible dust, gas and/or hybrid explosive atmospheres;
  • development of the Explosion Risk Assessment document (and determination of explosion hazard zones) for the designs of process installations and facilities in order to identify and eliminate hazards resulting from incorrect design assumptions;
  • updating the Explosion Risk Assessment document for process installations and facilities which were subject to changes with significant impact on process safety.

Description of our activities

The ATEX company, part of the WOLFF GROUP specialises in providing audits, expert opinions and reports in the field of broadly defined explosion safety. One of our key activities in this respect is the development of the Explosion Risk Assessment for industrial facilities. Our offer is mostly directed to companies from the power, chemical, food, wood and cement industries.

The experience of our engineers, verified by dozens of completed projects, enables us to provide Explosion Risk Assessment documents for individual pieces of equipment (dust collectors, cyclones, silos, dryers, etc.), parts of process installations (raw materials receiving, transport, storage and processing systems) as well as whole production facilities.

Legal basis

For work areas, where there is a possibility of occurrence of an explosive atmosphere, i.e. mixture of combustible substances, such as gases, vapours or dusts with air, the employer is obliged to provide explosion risk assessment. This obligation is a direct result of the Regulation of the Minister of Economy of 8 July 2010 on minimum requirements for the occupational safety and hygiene, related to the possible occurrence of explosive atmosphere in the workplace (Dz. U. 2010 no. 138, item 931).

The regulation specifies: the employer provides a comprehensive risk assessment related to the possibility of the occurrence of explosive atmospheres in workplaces, hereinafter referred to as “risk analysis”, taking into account at least:

  1. probability and duration time of explosive atmosphere occurrence;
  2. probability of the occurrence and activation of ignition sources, including electrostatic discharges;
  3. systems operated by the employer, applied substances and mixtures, resulting processes and their interactions;
  4. size of the expected effects of the explosion.

Places which are or can be connected via openings to places in which explosive atmospheres may occur shall be taken into account in assessing explosion risks.

Regulation of the Minister of Economy (Dz. U. 2010 no. 138, item 931, § 7.1.) also mentions the requirement to update the Explosion Risk Assessment document: The Explosion Protection Document shall be updated by the employer in each instance the work station, equipment or working system is changed in a way that may affect the results of risk assessment.
